How it was won

  1. 51 km to go

Movistar send Valverde up the road

On the steep Col du Pré, Valverde and Soler are up the road into the virtual yellow jersey as Bahrain-Merida drag the bunch after them.

  2. 38 km to go

The bunch thins on the Roselend

Nibali's Bahrain-Merida put Pellizotti on the front over the Cormet de Roselend and shred the group to thirty, clawing back half of Valverde's lead by the top.

  3. 16 km to go

    Dumoulin bridges, Valverde refuses

Dumoulin uses the long descent to bridge up to Valverde on the lower La Rosière, but when he turns to usher the Spaniard through, Valverde refuses to work, and Dumoulin drops him.

  4. 6 km to go

    Thomas attacks, Froome waves through

With 6km to go Thomas launches; Froome pulls over and waves the others across, but his rivals begin to call the bluff, and Bardet is the first to crack.

  5. 3 km to go

    Froome jumps on Martin's wheel

Dan Martin claws back and attacks; Froome, scarcely believing his luck, jumps aboard, and as the others hesitate the pair ease clear.

  6. At the line

Thomas takes the stage and yellow

In the final kilometre Thomas produces a stinging acceleration to jump clear of Dumoulin and win in La Rosière — Sky's leader now in yellow with his rivals strewn down the mountain.
