The road

At the start

Albi, and the wind on the plain

Daryl Impey won on Bastille Day and Alaphilippe kept the yellow jersey; the top eight is unchanged, Ciccone at twenty-three seconds, Pinot at fifty-three. Today runs 217 kilometres off the volcanic plateaux of the Aubrac down to Albi, four small climbs early and then open, exposed country all the way in. It is the last day before the rest day, and it is the kind of road on which a team can break a Tour in half.

How it was won

1. 134 km to go

   EF probe the crosswinds

   With the early break swallowed, EF Education First try to crack the race open in the wind, stringing the bunch out but failing to make it stick.

2. 228 km to go

   Ineos land the blow

   A few kilometres later Team Ineos and their allies tear the peloton apart with 28km to go, shattering it into three groups on an exposed section of crosswind.

3. 321 km to go

   GC hopes blown away

   Pinot, Urán and Landa are all on the wrong side and haemorrhage time; George Bennett, sent back to the cars for bottles at the worst possible moment, loses almost ten minutes as Ineos drill the front for Thomas and Bernal.

4. 4At the line

   Van Aert's maiden Tour win

   With Groenewegen caught behind the split, Wout van Aert proves the fastest of the front group in Albi, beating Viviani and Ewan.
