At the start

The only time trial, and no Dennis

Twenty-seven kilometres around Pau, on the centenary of the yellow jersey: the Tour's only individual test against the clock, and it falls before every one of the big mountains. Rohan Dennis, the world time trial champion whose team brought him here for precisely this day, abandoned yesterday. Alaphilippe still leads, Thomas at 1:12 and Bernal at 1:16, and the climbers behind them have a hole to dig out of.

   Asgreen sets the mark

   On the rolling, power-hungry Pau course the pure climbers flounder; Kasper Asgreen, riding for himself for once, sets a blistering provisional best.

2. 25 km to go

   Van Aert's Tour ends

   Deep into a ride that threatens the stage win, Wout van Aert catches the barriers with his thigh on a late corner and crashes hard, a deep cut ending his breakthrough Tour in an ambulance.

3. 3At the line

   Alaphilippe stuns again

   Alaphilippe produces an extraordinary time trial to win the stage and extend his lead over Thomas, while Quintana, Bardet and Landa all concede more than a minute.
