Stage 14
Thomas cracks under the kite
- Saturday 20 July 2019
- 111 km
- 3,375 m climbed
- Won by Thibaut Pinot
The road
At the start
A summit finish on the Tourmalet
Alaphilippe won the time trial too, and it has cost the climbers dearly: Thomas is at 1:26, Bernal at 2:52, Pinot at 3:22, and Quintana, Bardet and Landa each conceded more than a minute in Pau. Wout van Aert crashed into the barriers there and his Tour is over. Today is only 111 kilometres and it finishes on top of the Col du Tourmalet — only the third time the pass has ever been a finish.
How it was won
- 61 km to go
Bardet cracks on the Soulor
Ineos and Movistar lift the pace on the Col du Soulor and, surprisingly early, Romain Bardet is dropped, Adam Yates soon after, 60km from the summit finish.
- 21 km to go
Quintana slips away
As the race hits the mighty Tourmalet, Nairo Quintana stunningly drifts off the back of the lead group — while his own Movistar team is still bizarrely driving the front.
- 8 km to go
Gaudu rips it apart
David Gaudu sets a phenomenal pace with Pinot glued to his wheel, catching Barguil and shedding Valverde with 8km to go; Porte and Mas are the next to fall away.
- 1 km to go
Thomas cracks under the kite
Under the flamme rouge the defending champion Geraint Thomas comes undone as Emanuel Buchmann powers on into the swirling mist near the summit.
- At the line
Pinot conquers the Tourmalet
After a brief impasse Pinot takes it up in the final 500m and simply rides away — nobody can get near him on the steep run to the line atop the Tour's most storied climb.
