The road
At the start
Prat d'Albis, and Pinot is flying
Thibaut Pinot rode away in the mist on the Tourmalet and Alaphilippe, remarkably, came in six seconds behind him and kept yellow. Thomas is at 2:02, Kruijswijk 2:14, Bernal 3:00, and Pinot at 3:12 is climbing better than any of them. Today is 185 kilometres and close to five thousand metres of climbing to a new summit finish above Foix, with the vicious Mur de Péguère on the way. Then a rest day.
How it was won
- 30 km to go
Carnage on the Mur de Péguère
On the brutal ramps of the Mur de Péguère both break and peloton blow apart; Landa attacks and Jumbo-Visma whittle the yellow-jersey group down to sixteen riders.
- 9 km to go
Yates makes his bid
Simon Yates attacks the break with 8.5km to go on the summit finish of Prat d'Albis; Geschke cannot follow and the double stage-winner rides for glory.
- 6 km to go
Pinot bursts clear
Six kilometres from the line Thibaut Pinot explodes out of the GC group; only Bernal, Alaphilippe and Buchmann can follow, and Pinot keeps standing on the pedals, trying to ride everyone off his wheel until Alaphilippe cracks.
- 3 km to go
Alaphilippe cornered
A spent Alaphilippe is caught and made to work; Kruijswijk then Thomas launch inside the final 2km, leaving the yellow jersey behind to lose 27 precious seconds.
- At the line
Yates wins, Pinot dominates
Simon Yates takes the stage, but the day belongs to Pinot — 18 seconds on Bernal, 49 on Thomas, over a minute on Alaphilippe — the strongest climber of the race stamping his authority.
