The Grand Colombier broke the defending champion. Egan Bernal lost seven minutes and is out of the reckoning, and the Tour is now a duel between two Slovenians: Roglič in yellow, Pogačar forty seconds behind, Rigoberto Urán a minute and a half back in third. The last week opens in the Vercors — narrow roads, deep gorges, five climbs and a long drag up to Côte 2000 above Villard-de-Lans.

The Montee de Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte tears the big early breakaway to pieces, Lennard Kämna among the handful still climbing strongly as Villard-de-Lans comes into range.

Twenty kilometres from the finish, right at the top of the climb, Kämna leaps clear of what is left of the break, the young German backing himself for a maiden Grand Tour stage.
