The road

At the start

Bernal abandons, the Col de la Loze waits

Egan Bernal does not start. Last year's winner, broken on the Grand Colombier, has gone home, and Stefan Küng with him. Roglič leads Pogačar by forty seconds while Urán and López fight over the last step of the podium. Today is the queen stage: the Col de la Madeleine, and then a cycle path tarmacked all the way to 2,304 metres on the Col de la Loze, the roof of this Tour and the hardest finish on it.

How it was won

1. 163 km to go

   The break over the Madeleine

   On the queen stage the escape crosses the mighty Col de la Madeleine, Carapaz and Izagirre marking the strongest as the race points toward the monstrous Col de la Loze.

2. 220 km to go

   Carapaz strikes out

   Richard Carapaz jumps clear on the lower Loze, chasing the stage and mountain points, while Bahrain-McLaren wind up the pace in the yellow jersey group behind.

3. 310 km to go

   Bilbao turns the screw

   Pello Bilbao's relentless forcing single-files the favourites, shelling helper after helper as the road rears up toward the ski station of Meribel.

4. 44 km to go

   López attacks the cycle path

   On the horrific final ramps of the Col de la Loze, Miguel Ángel López surges away as Roglič, caught out by Kuss's pace, begins to lose ground.

5. 53 km to go

   Roglič counters, Pogačar wobbles

   Roglič jumps past his own teammate 2.3km out to limit the damage, while Pogačar has a bad moment, loses touch and even shoves a spectator from his path.

6. 6At the line

   López wins, Roglič gains

   López powers to the queen-stage win atop the Col de la Loze as Roglič extends his overall lead on Pogačar to 57 seconds - seemingly a decisive advantage.
