The road

At the start

Millau, and the wind is up

Nothing moved on Mont Aigoual — Adam Yates still leads by three seconds from Roglič, seven from Pogačar, and the break took the day. The race sets off under the Millau viaduct for a lumpy run across the Tarn to Lavaur, a stage written for another escape. But the locals count the wind here as a hill of its own, and the last fifty kilometres are long, straight and exposed.

How it was won

1. 1128 km to go

   Bora light the fuse

   Sagan and Bora-Hansgrohe rip the peloton apart on the very first climb, shelling sprinters Ewan, Bennett and world champion Pedersen as the race splinters into three.

2. 241 km to go

   Echelons in the wind

   With just over 40km to go Jumbo-Visma and Ineos join forces in the crosswinds, driving a split that catches Pogačar and Landa on the wrong side of the road.

3. 318 km to go

   Pogačar loses over a minute

   The echelon powers away and the gap stretches from seconds to over a minute, Pogačar, Landa, Porte and Mollema all conceding precious GC time.

4. 4At the line

   Van Aert wins in Lavaur

   From the front group Wout van Aert takes his second win of the Tour in Lavaur, capping a perfectly executed day of Jumbo-Visma aggression.
