The road

At the start

Tourmalet, then Pla d'Adet

Primož Roglič did not start yesterday and Juan Ayuso abandoned; the Tour is down to three men. Pogačar leads Remco Evenepoel by 1:06 and Jonas Vingegaard by 1:14 — and Vingegaard beat him the last time the road went properly uphill. Today is the first summit finish of this Tour: 4,050 metres of climbing in 152 kilometres, over the Col du Tourmalet and the Hourquette d'Ancizan, then the haul to Pla d'Adet.

How it was won

1. 192 km to go

   A big break over the early climbs

   A large fifteen-rider move goes clear ahead of the Tourmalet, Van der Poel and the KOM hopefuls fighting for the intermediate points and mountain prizes.

2. 242 km to go

   Over the Tourmalet

   Lazkano snatches the Souvenir Jacques Goddet atop the fabled Tourmalet as UAE's Politt metronomes the peloton up behind, steadily pegging back the break.

3. 37 km to go

   Yates springs the trap

   On the climb to Pla d'Adet Adam Yates launches a surprise satellite move 7.2km from the top, forcing Visma and Soudal to chase and setting the stage for his leader.

4. 45 km to go

   Pogačar explodes clear

   Pogačar rockets away 4.6km from the summit, latches onto Yates for a perfect mountain lead-out, then flicks the elbow and rides off alone toward the clouds.

5. 5At the line

   Solo to Pla d'Adet

   Pogačar powers to a 39-second win on the first summit finish, extending his lead and delivering a heavy blow on the first Pyrenean day.
