The road

At the start

Bastille Day, Plateau de Beille

Pogačar soloed to Pla d'Adet and now leads Jonas Vingegaard by 1:57 and Remco Evenepoel by 2:22. Today is longer and harder: 198 kilometres over the Peyresourde, the Menté, the Portet-d'Aspet and the Col d'Agnès, and then 15.8 kilometres at 7.9% up to Plateau de Beille. It is the fourteenth of July, and the French will go from the gun. Tom Pidcock and Alberto Bettiol are both already out of the race.

How it was won

1. 1138 km to go

   Bastille Day fireworks

   Up the Col du Peyresourde from the gun, the French attack en masse on their national day, a huge 21-rider break eventually forming after breathless early racing.

2. 248 km to go

   The break splinters on the Agnes

   Red Bull's relentless tactics whittle the move down over the Col d'Agnès, Hindley, Mas and Carapaz emerging as the strongest survivors as the peloton closes.

3. 311 km to go

   Vingegaard attacks Plateau de Beille

   After Jorgenson's ferocious pace guts the group, Vingegaard attacks 10.5km from the summit, only for Pogačar to answer with no sign of weakness.

4. 45 km to go

   Pogačar's knockout counter

   With 5.4km left Pogačar counters and rides clear, a second straight solo mountain win on the mythic Plateau de Beille and what looks like the decisive blow of the Tour.

5. 5At the line

   Back-to-back solo wins

   Pogačar crests 1:08 up on Vingegaard to stretch his overall lead past three minutes, the Giro-Tour double now firmly in his sights.
