The road

At the start

Into the southern Alps

Jasper Philipsen won in Nîmes for a third time and the classification did not move: Pogačar 3:09 up on Jonas Vingegaard, 5:19 on Remco Evenepoel. Today the race turns east for the Alps, 178 kilometres across the Drôme with nothing to trouble anyone until the last forty — then the Col Bayard, the Col du Noyer and a rise to SuperDévoluy. Five days remain, and the yellow jersey expects wind.

1. 1118 km to go

   Crosswinds and chaos early

   Echelons briefly catch out Adam Yates before hours of all-out attacking at 47kph as riders fight desperately to shape the day's move toward the Alps.

2. 260 km to go

   A 48-man group forms

   A vast group with a rider from nearly every team finally escapes, the peloton conceding almost ten minutes and handing the stage to the break.

3. 318 km to go

   Carapaz jumps on the Col du Noyer

   Simon Yates attacks first but Carapaz surges across and past him near the top of the Noyer, riding clear for Ecuador's first-ever Tour stage win.

4. 44 km to go

   Pogačar attacks behind

   Eight minutes down the road, Pogačar splits the GC group on the penultimate climb; Evenepoel counters on the final rise before the yellow jersey sprints back two more seconds.

5. 5At the line

   Carapaz completes the set

   Carapaz solos into SuperDévoluy to complete the Grand Tour stage-win set, a day he'll remember for life.
