Out of the Alps, down to Valence
The Alps let go of the race here. From Chambéry the road falls away through the Isère by Voiron and Vinay, over unnumbered bumps to a high point before Roybon, and from Romans-sur-Isère the last thirty kilometres into Valence are nearly flat. A sprinters' day on exposed Rhône valley roads, where a change of direction ten kilometres out can open the bunch to a crosswind.
