Before the race

A Welsh Classic on the first Sunday

The Tour's first stage in Wales runs south from Welshpool over the Côte d'Epynt and the Bannau Brycheiniog, then into the valleys, where Rhigos, Penrhys and Maerdy come one on the heels of the next. The stingers wait late: Hengoed, 700 metres at 11%, then Caerphilly, 2 kilometres at 8.1%, and a fast dozen kilometres into Cardiff. Seven climbs, and a one-day Classic's parcours.
