The road

At the start

Les Praeres, four kilometres of concrete

La Camperona cut Jesús Herrada's lead to 1:42 over Simon Yates, with Nairo Quintana at 1:50 and Alejandro Valverde at 1:54. Today is harder still: 171 kilometres across Asturias over San Isidro, La Mozqueta and the Falla de los Lobos, and then Les Praeres de Nava — under four kilometres long, much of it a concrete farm track, and steeper than twenty per cent in places.

How it was won

1. 1111 km to go

   A dangerous break

   A six-man move goes early and, ominously for the red jersey, contains Michał Kwiatkowski, forcing Movistar to help chase all day.

2. 221 km to go

   The turning point at Los Lobos

   The Alto de la Falla de los Lobos, twenty-one kilometres out, is where the stage turns — the break cracks and Kwiatkowski powers over the top alone.

3. 35 km to go

   Onto the farm track

   With 5km to go the road narrows to a concrete farm track and the gradient bites; a small lead group of the favourites, Yates and Quintana among them, forms.

4. 41 km to go

   Yates' explosive kick

   Waiting for the perfect moment, Yates brings the group back together at the kilometre banner and then produces an acceleration nobody on the mountain can answer.

5. 5At the line

   Yates wins and takes red

   Simon Yates beats his chest atop the savage Alto Les Praeres, taking the stage and the red jersey — the redemption arc after his Giro collapse beginning in earnest.
