The first flat day, and the sprinters

Dan Martin outfoxed the climbers on the rise to La Laguna Negra and is five seconds off red; Roglič still has it, Carapaz sits at thirteen. Dani Martínez, who won on the Puy Mary a month ago, has gone home. Today is the first stage the sprinters can look at — 191 kilometres from Numancia to Ejea de los Caballeros, one sprint 22 kilometres out, and nothing to climb at all.

   The sprinters' teams take control on the run into Ejea, QuickStep massing to launch Sam Bennett in the Vuelta's first bunch gallop.

   Bennett wins the sprint

   Sam Bennett carries his Tour form into the Vuelta, taking the bunch sprint after Jasper Philipsen briefly looked to have stolen it.
