The road

At the start

No Tourmalet: France is closed

Today was meant to be the queen stage, over the Aubisque and the Tourmalet, but the race cannot cross into France this year and the organisers have redrawn it inside Spain: the Petralba, the Cotefablo, and a haul up to the ski station at Formigal. Roglič still leads Dan Martin by five seconds and Carapaz by thirteen. It is forecast to be cold and wet up there, and Tim Wellens has the mountains jersey.

   Cold, wet and hard

   On a freezing, rain-lashed Pyrenean stage the break labours over the Puerto de Cotefablo as the peloton, led by Jumbo, shivers through the valleys below.

2. 212 km to go

   Izagirre powers away

   From the breakaway Ion Izagirre forges clear on the run toward Formigal, riding into the mist for a fine solo stage win.

3. 31 km to go

   Roglič cracks on Formigal

   On the final climb to Aramon-Formigal Roglič shows the first weakness of his Vuelta as Carapaz and Carthy attack, the Ineos rider distancing the champion by 43 seconds.

4. 4At the line

   Carapaz seizes red

   Carapaz crosses well clear of Roglič to take the red jersey, turning the overall battle on its head on a brutal, wintry day.
