Formigal turned it over. Richard Carapaz took the red jersey in the cold and the rain, Hugh Carthy is second at eighteen seconds and Dan Martin third, while Primož Roglič — who had not looked like losing a second all week — is fourth at thirty. After the rest day comes another hilly one out of Vitoria-Gasteiz, over the first-category Alto de Orduña twice, the last time nineteen kilometres out.

   On the final ascent of the Puerto de Orduna, Michael Woods leaps clear to form a small lead group from the break, backing his climbing legs.

   Clear over the top

   Woods presses on over the summit and down toward Villanueva de Valdegovia, holding off his breakaway companions.
