At the start

Andorra, and the first summit finish

Andrea Piccolo took red out of a breakaway in Barcelona; behind him the favourites are still bunched together. Today the Vuelta leaves the coast for Andorra and the first of nine summit finishes: the Coll d'Ordino topping out near 2,000 metres, a fearsome descent, then 6.8 kilometres at 8.3 per cent to Arinsal. Jonas Vingegaard has not raced since Paris, and people mean to find out what that is worth.

How it was won

1. 121 km to go

   Coll d'Ordino

   On the first big climb of the Vuelta Jay Vine attacks, drawing out Bardet and Kelderman, and the day's break begins to shatter.

2. 29 km to go

   Stalemate to Arinsal

   Kämna and Caruso lead over the top and no GC team will commit, the chase to the leaders becoming a wary stand-off on the run to the final climb.

3. 33 km to go

   Kuss lights the fuse

   On the steepest slopes with 3km to go UAE reel in the leaders and a Sepp Kuss attack pares the group to twelve, though the GC fight never truly ignites.

4. 4At the line

   Arinsal

   Evenepoel opens the sprint and out-powers Tour champion Vingegaard for the first summit finish — then crashes into a spectator past the line, coming up bloodied but unhurt.
